Yes, books have a voice. Actually, they have two. I cannot tell you how many writers I have mentioned voice to, and they reacted similarly to the title. They didn’t get it. They asked what voice is, but if you ever meet me in person, you’ll realize how bad I am with verbal communication. There’s a lot of stuttering and ‘um’s. It’s ugly. And voice isn’t an easy thing to describe either, but it’s one of the most important things in writing. In fact, most agents will say that the voice of the writing is what they base their decision on whether to represent a writer or not. If they don’t connect with the voice, then they won’t have enough interest in the character or the story to represent it.
